I think Xena is a top. Not because she would be the guy or because Gabrielle is weak, but because of how we’ve seen her personality on the show. There are many times where we see Xena have to be the one in control of everything and we’ve seen her be the aggressive one with Ares and Caesar in their intimate moments. It’s not just because I find DomXena/SubGabrielle really hot.

“The Bitter Suite” is my favorite episode. In that moment Xena and Gabrielle’s friendship is tested. I love the mixture of chaos, the pent up emotions & sadness. They both finally tell each other the truth about how they feel. Xena learns to stop treating Gabrielle as a sidekick…well sort of haha!

Gabrielle’s evolvement from naive farmgirl to warrior was perfect. And they never went overboard with her skills like they did with Xena. Gabrielle was a badass warrior but she was still flawed and had her weaknesses.

Lucy have said that Xena was bisexual and looking at the show, I think that’s the only conclusion you can make. She said she loved Marcus, yes, but from the second season forward the only person she said she loved was Gabrielle. Everyone else was left ambigious or hinted at. With the possible exception of Akemi, but I don’t think anyone believes that Xena loved her at all.

I like that despite their different approaches to acting, Lucy being a more “here-and-now” type of actor while Renée is more of a method actor, they both think of their characters as completely different people. It really made Xena and Gabrielle feel like real people and not just characters.

I think that Xena and Gabrielle’s men was just a cover by the studios to not make the core lesbianism so obvious. It’s only thanks to the perseverance of the writers and directors that the true essence of the show came out and we see how much Xena and Gabrielle loved each other romantically.

I have the headcanon that Gabrielle was Aphrodite’s Maid of Honor.
